I want to talk about fertilizers used around trees…Now we know how picky trees are it is no surprise they don’t like N-P-K fertilizers. Lawn fertilizers and chemicals like weed n feed are really bad for the environment and belive it or not bad for plants too.
When you want to feed some thing in nature, look at ourselves. Do you only eat 3 things all the time? No trees don’t like junk food, they want some organic matter around them for the soil microbes to break down. This natural action deposits over 200 different nutirents for roots to choose from…I love to point to the woods and say who is feeding them, all those trees and shrubs seem to be healthy and no one feeds them…other than the soil microbes.
Most times I find the soil microbes around people’s yard in dispare, a simple soil biology test will show who is there and who isn’t. I then work to replace the missing microbes and set them up with a quality food source I make myself.
Typical lawn chemicals kill off the soil microbes, harming the natural soil food chain, as the soil biology disapears trees stress they cannot defend thems selves with a compromised inmune system. Unhealthy inmune systems let disease and insects flourish, most people then use pesticides and kill even more of the soil life….a spiral down.
